Mumbai: There is big news from Mazgaon area of Mumbai. Here, there have been allegations of eggs being thrown during the arrival procession of the Ganpati idol, after which tension spread in the area. The incident is being reported on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. After the uproar, the police had to reach the spot and increase security.
According to the local people, a procession was being taken out at night for the arrival of Ganpati Bappa. People were bringing the idol with drums. It is alleged that then some people from a nearby building threw eggs at the procession. As soon as this news spread, anger spread among the people present there. Within no time, a large number of people gathered and sloganeering started.
After the egg was thrown, the people participating in the procession protested. People from the other side also came forward. This led to an altercation and clash like situation between the two groups. Seeing the situation worsening, the police were immediately informed. The police reached the spot and brought the situation under control after convincing both parties.
The people of the area and the festival committee have expressed displeasure over this incident. Public Festival Committee Chairman Hitesh Jadhav said that this is an attack on the faith of the festival. They have demanded from the police that the accused should be caught soon after checking CCTV and strict action should be taken. Local people say that the police have assured them of action.
The police force has been increased in Mazgaon after the incident. The police are continuously patrolling to ensure that no new clashes take place. At present the situation is calm but tension remains. Till the time of writing the news, the police had not given any official statement on this.
This is not the first time. Earlier in August 2022 also, a case of eggs being thrown at the Ganesh procession in Nagpada-Kamatipura area of Mumbai had come to light. Even then there was a lot of commotion and the police arrested the accused and registered an FIR. At present the police are investigating the matter and efforts are being made to maintain peace in the area.
