National News: A major controversy erupted on Tuesday over the Rajya Sabha elections in Punjab. Janata Party President Navneet Chaturvedi is accused of forging the signatures of 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs to file nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections. During the investigation, the signatures were found to be forged, following which the Punjab Police filed an FIR against Navneet Chaturvedi and a Rupnagar police team arrived in Chandigarh to arrest him. However, the matter became complicated when the Chandigarh Police provided security to Chaturvedi.
According to sources, the Rupnagar Police attempted to take action near Sukhna Lake, leading to a lengthy argument between the two police teams. Following this, the Chandigarh Police took Navneet Chaturvedi to their headquarters and deployed heavy security there.
This entire incident has led to a confrontation between the Punjab and Chandigarh Police. The Aam Aadmi Party called this a violation of the democratic process and demanded a serious investigation into the matter. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, "The question is not who submitted the fake documents, but who sent them and who is protecting them. Protecting an accused by the Chandigarh Police, which is under the Central Government, is tantamount to obstruction of justice."
Chandigarh Police maintains that they are following legal process. They say that no one can be handed over to the Punjab Police without proper documents. Discussions are currently underway regarding coordination between the two police forces.
Elections are to be held for one Rajya Sabha seat in Punjab. The AAP has nominated industrialist Rajinder Gupta for this seat. Since the party has an absolute majority, no other party fielded a candidate, but Navneet Chaturvedi filed his nomination, plunging the entire matter into controversy.
