The opposition’s INDIA alliance on Tuesday named former Supreme Court judge B. Sudarshan Reddy from Telangana as its candidate for the Vice-President’s post. He will face NDA nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan in the election. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced the decision after talks with all alliance partners, and the Aam Aadmi Party has also backed Reddy’s candidature.
No consensus with the govt
The government had tried to build consensus on the vice president’s name, but the efforts did not succeed. Two days ago, the NDA had announced the name of C.P. Radhakrishnan. After this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was assigned the responsibility of talking to all the parties. Before B. Sudarshan Reddy, the name of DMK’s Tiruchi Siva was also being discussed in political circles, but the INDIA alliance finally decided to make Sudarshan, who comes from Telangana, its vice presidential candidate.
Who is candidate B. Sudarshan Reddy?
From 2007 to 2011, B. Sudarshan Reddy was a Supreme Court judge.He was born in 1946, finished his early schooling in Andhra Pradesh, and then attended Osmania University to obtain a law degree.After starting his legal career with the well-known attorney K. Pratap Reddy, he was named government counsel at the High Court in August 1988. In 1993, Reddy joined the Andhra Pradesh High Court as an Additional Judge.In 2005, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, and in 2007, he was promoted to the Supreme Court.He was named Goa's Lokayukta in 2013.
