National News: The horrific Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has once again sparked a debate about aircraft safety and the position of seats. Of the 242 people on board, 241 died, but one man—Ramesh Vishwas Kumar—miraculously survived. He was seated in seat number 11A. Ramesh's video, in which he is seen walking out of the debris in an injured state, has gone viral on social media. This incident is not only miraculous, but it also raises the question of whether sitting on a particular seat can save one from a plane crash.
According to Time magazine and other international studies, passengers sitting in the rear of the plane are more likely to survive. Research shows that the mortality rate in the rear seats is around 28%, while in the front it reaches 44%. That is, sitting in the back has a higher chance of survival
The middle part of the plane, i.e., where the wings are located, is most at risk. Fuel tanks are present here, which can cause a serious explosion in case of any collision or fire. Due to this, the middle seats are considered the most unsafe at the time of an accident.
Researchers at Greenwich University believe that passengers sitting near the emergency exit have a quick way out of the debris. These seats are usually in the middle or rear part of the plane. Passengers sitting there have often come out safely even in serious accidents.
The window seat in the plane is often considered exciting, but it can be risky in terms of safety. In case of fire or smoke, it may take time to get out of the window seat. According to experts, aisle seats are safer because it is easier to stand up and get out from there in an emergency.
British citizen Ramesh Vishwas Kumar said that the plane hit the ground with a loud bang just 30 seconds after takeoff. He regained consciousness when there were dead bodies all around and pieces of the plane were scattered. A passerby picked him up and put him in an ambulance. His brother was also on the same flight, whose search is still on. Although no seat is 100% safe, it is clear from the data of old accidents that the choice of seat can play a big role in survival. While sitting in the plane, one should not only think about the view from the window but also think about the exit strategy in case of an emergency.
