Kolkata/Tarakeshwar: PM Narendra Modi is in Bengal on Saturday. The visit is for 2 days, but the discussion will continue for the whole week. From Tarakeswar Maidan to Kolkata's Red Road, programmes are being organised one after the other. There will be talk of development, farmers will get money, and there will also be yoga. The centre is calling it a “development tour”.
Even before the start of the tour, Modi congratulated Bengal. Said that Bengal gave literature, song, art, science, and everything to the country. Mentioned from Rabindranath to Satyajit Ray. The meaning was clear, salute to the heritage of Bengal. The people of Bengal were happy to hear this.
There is a big rally in Tarakeswar, Hooghly on Saturday afternoon. Modi will inaugurate many projects there and also lay the foundation stone of some. But the biggest thing is 23rd instalment of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. Money directly into the bank. Thousands of crores will reach the accounts of lakhs of farmers of Bengal. Every farmer was waiting for this.
There are other things with money. Crop insurance scheme, “Agri Stack” with digital farming, and promotion of organic farming. The government's plan is clear, now farming will be done through mobile. From soil testing to market prices, everything is on phone. Modi himself will say that farming is now difficult without technology.
Kolkata's Red Road will be completely functional on Sunday. The main event of International Yoga Day is here. Thousands of people will sit spread out on mats. Modi himself will sit. Kolkata's event is considered to be the biggest after Delhi. A crowd will gather on the pretext of yoga, and the message will also go out.
As soon as Yoga is over, Modi will go straight to the port. There will be talk of maritime trade and Made in India weapons. Indigenous projects will be shown with the tag of self-reliant India. This is the effort to increase the role of Bengal in defence production.
Officially the visit is “non-political”. But nothing is non-political in Bengal. Both TMC and BJP are sensing this. BJP wants to strengthen its ground. TMC is saying that the centre should first pay the outstanding money of Bengal. Every meeting, every line of Modi is being linked to the 2026 elections.
Farmers are waiting for SMS, “Rs 2000 deposited in your account”. Kolkatans are waiting for a place on Red Road. And Bengal is watching whether the Centre's stance is soft or strict. Bengal will remain in the headlines of the country for the next 48 hours. There will be development and politics too.
