Patna: After the crushing defeat in Bihar elections 2025, Congress is back under the same pressure. The party says that votes were stolen, while the opponents are repeating the taunt that Congress has lost 95 elections under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. This claim is doing the rounds on social media, but before understanding its truth, it is important to see Rahul Gandhi's political journey.
What will change in 2026 UP elections?
Rahul had a strong start. Victory in Amethi in 2004, major party responsibilities in 2007, and 21 seats in UP in 2009—this is considered his best phase. But after 2014 the situation changed. The figure of 95 defeats is exaggerated, but it is true that in the last twenty years, Congress has got relief only a few times under his leadership in major elections.
How did the political journey begin ?
Rahul Gandhi's political debut was in 2004 by becoming a Lok Sabha member from Amethi. Became General Secretary in 2007, when Youth Congress and NSUI were given new life. In 2009 Lok Sabha, Congress got 21 seats from UP. Rahul's strategy looked amazing. He became the Vice President in 2013 and PM candidate in 2014, but only after being elected President in 2017, he resign due to the defeat in 2019. Become the leader of opposition in 2024. Rahul focused on UP and came fourth in the 2012 assembly elections, but the shine of 2009 remained intact. Did early success create confusion?
Why the series of defeats since 2014?
The decline of Congress started from 2014 Lok Sabha. The party was reduced to 44 seats. After this, there was some relief in Maharashtra (2014, 2019), Delhi (2015, 2020), Bihar (2015, 2020, 2025), UP (2017, 2022), Gujarat (2017, 2022)—only in 2018 Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The figure of 95 defeats is in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha combined, but under Rahul's leadership, there were only 2-3 victories in 25 major elections. Won 5 seats in 2025 in Bihar, and that too against RJD's 33. SIR (Voter List Revision) accused of 'vote theft', but organizational weakness is the real reason. Is Rahul's 'disorientation' sinking the party?
Revolt in Congress-Criticism of Tharoor-Iyer, will Rahul improve?
Shashi Tharoor said that scientific investigation is necessary, not introspection. Mani Shankar Aiyar sarcastically said that he was not even invited to the campaign. There is pressure on the high command due to Bihar defeat. Corruption and lack of ground connection were seen in ticket distribution. Will Rahul's 'new formula' work in UP in 2026?
