National News: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar took on the Congress party in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, accusing it of ignoring lessons from history. He remarked that “some people prefer to avoid the past and selectively remember only what suits them.” His remarks came as the House discussed the Indus Water Treaty, which India has halted following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Clash in Parliament Over ‘Operation Sindoor’

The discussion turned heated when the opposition alleged that the United States had intervened in the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan, even claiming that “former U.S. President Donald Trump had mediated the truce.”

Jaishankar dismissed these claims, firmly clarifying the record: “Let me make this absolutely clear. Between April 22 and June 16, there was not a single phone call between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi.”

Looking Back at Nehru’s Approach

Jaishankar then referred to a statement made by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1960: “On 30 November 1960, Nehru told Parliament it should not take decisions about water sharing or related financial matters. That position faced criticism even then.”

He went on to say that Nehru prioritized the concerns of Pakistani Punjab but made no reference to the farmers of Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, or Gujarat. According to Jaishankar, the treaty reflected flawed thinking from that era, and he argued that Congress still refuses to acknowledge or learn from those missteps.

‘Modi Government Is Fixing the Damage’

The minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reversed many long‑standing errors: “For decades, we were told that Nehru’s decisions couldn’t be undone. But this government proved otherwise. Article 370 was scrapped, and the Indus Water Treaty is also being addressed now.”

‘Blood and Water Cannot Flow Together’

Jaishankar also delivered a clear message to Pakistan: “As long as Pakistan continues backing terrorism, the treaty will remain suspended. We have made it very clear—blood and water will not flow together.” The Foreign Minister stressed that India will not repeat the mistakes of the past. He warned that Pakistan must shift its stance on both terrorism and water issues—otherwise India will respond firmly and decisively.
