A day before Janmashtami, Prime Minister Narendra Modi drew inspiration from Lord Krishna’s legendary weapon, the Sudarshan Chakra. Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, he announced the launch of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission a project aimed at creating a powerful aerial shield and precision counterstrike capabilities in the next 10 years, by 2035.
PM Modi explained that this mission will not only block enemy attacks but also respond with greater force. The shield will expand over time to protect every citizen, ensuring India’s technology stays ahead of any threat. The system will be developed, researched, and produced entirely within the country.
The Sudarshan Chakra Mission will act like India’s own version of Israel’s Iron Dome, guarding against missiles, drones, and other aerial threats. According to experts, it could combine the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) with an Integrated Rocket Force. This will create a complete defence network capable of tracking threats and launching precise counterstrikes.
PM Modi said the mission will form part of the Rashtra Suraksha Kavach initiative, safeguarding important sites like hospitals, religious places, and critical infrastructure using advanced technology. The idea took shape after a Pakistani attempt to hit Indian civilian infrastructure earlier this year during a brief conflict.
At the core of the mission lies the IACCS a fully automated air defence system developed by Bharat Electronics Limited. It connects radar stations, sensors, and missile units nationwide, giving the military a complete real-time picture of India’s airspace. Using the high-speed Air Force Network (AFNET), it enables instant communication between land, sea, and air forces.
This system can track enemy aircraft, drones, or missiles and respond within seconds. AI-powered upgrades now help in quickly identifying threats and selecting the best countermeasures. During Operation Sindoor, these systems successfully destroyed incoming drones and missiles from Pakistan.
The planned Integrated Rocket Force will add long-range precision strike capabilities, possibly including hypersonic and ballistic missiles. When linked with IACCS, it will allow India to detect threats early and respond with well-coordinated defensive and offensive actions. By 2035, the Sudarshan Chakra Mission aims to provide India with a seamless defence and strike network, protecting both military and civilian assets. As PM Modi said, this expanding shield will make every citizen feel secure and give India a decisive edge in aerial warfare.
