The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is witnessing fresh internal conflict as MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra engage in a public feud. The dispute began after Banerjee made controversial remarks about the alleged gang-rape incident at South Calcutta Law College and then took personal digs at Moitra in retaliation.
Kalyan Banerjee, while defending himself, criticized Moitra for her past, referencing her marriage to former BJD MP Pinaki Misra. He said, “Mahua returned from her honeymoon and started fighting with me. She calls me anti-woman. What about her? Didn’t she hurt another woman by marrying a man who was already in a 40-year marriage?” He further questioned Moitra’s credibility by referring to her past suspension from Parliament and called her “the most anti-woman MP.”
The rift began when Mahua Moitra backed the party's move to publicly condemn and disassociate from Banerjee’s and MLA Madan Mitra’s remarks about the gang-rape case. Moitra commented on X, saying, “Misogyny exists across political parties, but what sets us apart is that we call it out, regardless of who says it.”
Earlier, Banerjee had said that the police couldn’t prevent a rape between friends in schools or colleges. Mitra blamed the survivor, saying she shouldn’t have gone alone to the college when it was closed.
The assault occurred on June 25, when a 24-year-old law student was allegedly raped by three men inside the college premises. She said she was lured into the guard’s room, where she was sexually assaulted, recorded, and threatened. The attack lasted over three hours, and she was beaten with a hockey stick for resisting.
All four accused, including the security guard, have been arrested. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed. The National Commission for Women and the BJP have demanded a thorough and swift investigation, calling out the state government for failing to protect women.
