Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to the United States and Western nations for urgent help following one of the deadliest Russian airstrikes since the war began. He asked for advanced air defence systems to protect Ukrainian skies and civilians from future attacks.

The overnight assault on Saturday saw Russia launching over 470 drones and 60 missiles, wounding at least 12 people, according to Ukrainian authorities. A child was injured when a residential building in Smila was hit by a Russian missile. President Zelensky called it an attack on “everything that sustains life”.

Ukrainian Pilot Killed As Another F-16 Fighter Goes Down

One of Ukraine’s F-16 fighter pilots, Maksym Ustymenko, died during the operation after reportedly shooting down seven incoming air threats. Zelensky confirmed his death and honoured his bravery. Ukraine has already lost three F-16 since it began operating these U.S.-made aircraft, though it has not revealed how many remain in service. These fighter jets have become an essential part of Ukraine’s air defence strategy, and losing skilled pilots has been a significant setback.

Ukraine Ready to Purchase American Defence Systems

In his statement, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is ready to buy American air defence systems like the Patriot missiles, which he believes can save lives. He urged the United States and NATO allies to show leadership and act swiftly.

U.S. President Donald Trump, now back in office, has not yet approved any new military assistance. However, after a recent meeting with Zelensky during a NATO summit, Trump acknowledged the request for Patriot systems and said he would review it.

Russian Assaults Continue as Ukraine Faces More Threats

Zelensky pointed out that Russia has launched more than 114 missiles, nearly 1,100 glide bombs, and more than 1,270 drones in the last week. He warned that Moscow will not stop unless it is strongly resisted. Meanwhile, Russia claimed that a Ukrainian drone strike in Luhansk killed one person, though both sides continue to deny targeting civilians. Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have increased recently, bringing more destruction and casualties.
