New Delhi: Regarding North India, the heatwave is likely to persist across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi. A severe heatwave is forecast for certain parts of West Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh. An alert for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and heatwaves has been issued for various parts of the country for May 26. This information comes from the latest press release issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

What did the IMD announce?

While the impact of rainfall is expected to intensify across Northeast India, South India, and the eastern states, severe heat could exacerbate difficulties for residents in several regions of Northwest and Central India. According to the Meteorological Department, the Southwest Monsoon is advancing rapidly, and its effects have already begun to manifest, particularly in Kerala and the coastal regions.

In Northeast India—specifically Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura—light to moderate rainfall is expected on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is likely at several locations during this period. Forecasts also indicate the possibility of very heavy rainfall in certain pockets of Assam and Meghalaya. Additionally, an alert for heavy rain and strong winds has been issued for West Bengal and Sikkim. Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha may experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Warnings have been issued regarding strong winds, potentially reaching speeds of 50 to 70 kilometers per hour, in select locations.

Where is Rainfall Expected?

In South India, the spell of rainfall is expected to continue across Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, and Telangana. According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is likely at numerous places in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Coastal and interior regions of Karnataka may also experience strong winds accompanied by thunderstorms. Weather conditions are also expected to remain unsettled in Andhra Pradesh and the Rayalaseema region. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen in coastal areas to remain vigilant, as rough seas and high waves are anticipated.

Will Heatwave Persist in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh?

In North India, the heatwave is expected to continue across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi. Severe heatwave conditions are forecast for parts of Western Rajasthan and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Temperatures are also expected to remain significantly high in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. However, light rainfall accompanied by strong winds may offer some relief in certain areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The Meteorological Department has advised people to avoid venturing out in the sun during the afternoon hours and to consume an adequate amount of water.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning that areas experiencing heavy rainfall could face issues such as waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and inundation of low-lying regions. Meanwhile, health-related complications may rise in states affected by the heatwave. The IMD has urged the public to keep a close watch on weather updates and to adhere to the guidelines issued by the administration. Monsoon activity is expected to intensify further over the next few days, potentially expanding the coverage of rainfall across Southern and Northeastern India.
