New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert regarding fog and cold weather. According to the IMD, dense fog is expected in the morning hours over northwest, central, east, and northeast India for the next four to five days.
The IMD also predicts cold day conditions in some areas of East Rajasthan between January 5 and 7, in Jharkhand on January 5, in West Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal between January 5 and 7, and in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal on January 5 and 6.
In addition, a cold wave is also expected. According to the forecast, a cold wave is likely in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 6 to 9, in East Rajasthan from January 6 to 10, in West Rajasthan from January 8 to 10, in Chhattisgarh from January 6 to 8, and in Jharkhand on January 6 and 7.
The IMD reported that due to very dense fog in the last 24 hours, visibility was less than 50 meters in many places. Affected areas included parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Uttarakhand. Visibility was zero in Gorakhpur, Gwalior, and Jabalpur due to dense fog. Dense fog was also reported in Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam.
According to the IMD, the day was significantly colder in some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Meanwhile, brown, rocky ice was observed in some places in Uttarakhand. Light snowfall was reported in isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
The IMD said that several weather systems, including a Western Disturbance over North India and strong westerly winds in the upper atmosphere, are influencing the current conditions. Under their influence, light to moderate rain or snowfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next two days.
Minimum temperatures remained significantly below normal over large parts of North and Central India. The lowest minimum temperature in the plains was recorded at 2.4 degrees Celsius in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. The meteorological department has forecast a drop of two to three degrees Celsius in minimum temperatures in northwest India over the next four days and in central and eastern India over the next two days.
