New Delhi: Rishabh Pant has stepped down as Lucknow Super Giants captain, the franchise confirmed on Friday, May 29. The wicketkeeper-batter made the decision following two consecutive failed campaigns with the side, requesting to be relieved of his duties with immediate effect; a request the franchise accepted.
Pant arrived at LSG with enormous expectations. Lucknow splashed Rs. 27 crore on him at the IPL 2025 mega auction, making him one of the most expensive buys in the tournament's history. The hope was that his aggressive brand of cricket and natural leadership would drag the franchise into contention. It never happened.
"Lucknow Super Giants wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect," the team said in an official statement.
Pant's bat went quiet too. He managed 269 runs in 14 matches last season, and only 312 this year; numbers that simply don't justify the Rs. 27 crore price tag.
What comes next for both Pant and LSG remains to be seen. At 28, Pant has plenty of cricket ahead of him; but rebuilding his reputation as a leader will take time.
