Neeraj Chopra Conferred Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Rank: Indian star javelin thrower and Olympic gold medallist, Neeraj Chopra, was conferred today the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. The event was held in New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi.
As per the Gazette of India, a weekly public journal and an authorized legal document of the Government of India (GoI), his appointment came into effect on April 16. It is to be noted here that in August 2016, Neeraj joined the Indian Army as a junior commissioned officer in the rank of Naib Subedar.
Previously, Neeraj Chopra was conferred with the Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, and Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal.
Speaking at the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Neeraj Chopra for his exceptional achievements and called him an inspiration for generations to come. He said, "Lt Col (Hony) Neeraj Chopra embodies the highest ideals of discipline, dedication and national pride, serving as an inspiration to generations within the sporting fraternity and the Armed Forces alike."
