New Delhi: When a calamity strikes, and the forces of nature threaten to destroy everything in their path, it is the true heroes, those who stand firm on the front lines to save the lives of others without a thought for their own, who emerge. To honour the valour, dedication, and supreme sacrifice of such brave hearts, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) paid a heartfelt tribute to its 17 immortal martyrs.
On the occasion of the NDRF’s Raising Day, a memorial ceremony for the martyrs was held on October 30 at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai attended the ceremony as the chief guest. While paying floral tributes to the fallen personnel, he remarked that the contribution of the Central Armed Police Forces and State Police Forces toward national security and the protection of citizens is incomparable. The sacrifice of these martyrs will forever remain etched in the nation’s memory. The families of the martyrs were also present on this occasion.
Chief Guest Nityanand Rai commended the NDRF for its operational approach, reliability, and achievements in the field of disaster management. He noted that the arrival of NDRF teams in disaster-stricken areas instills a sense of hope and trust among the people. From responding to severe cyclones to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, the courage and promptness with which the force has carried out relief and rescue operations are truly commendable. Referring to the Prime Minister’s ten-point agenda for disaster risk reduction, he emphasised strengthening pre-disaster preparedness and empowering communities to cope with disasters. He stated that the goal is to build a nation that remains resilient in the face of disasters.
NDRF Director General Piyush Anand welcomed the guests and, while paying tribute to the fallen personnel, expressed deep condolences and gratitude to their families. On behalf of the force, he reiterated the commitment to continue the tradition of service to the nation, courage, and dedication.
The Chief Guest and the Director General met with the families of the martyrs to enquire about their well-being. They also took note of the families' concerns and needs, assuring them that these would be addressed.
During the ceremony, bands from the NDRF, Bal Bhavan Public School, and Rajkiya Sarvodaya Co-educational School delivered impressive performances, offering a musical tribute to the brave martyrs. The event was attended by senior officials, representatives from various organisations, schoolchildren, and personnel from the NDRF and other security forces.
It is noteworthy that 17 NDRF personnel have made the supreme sacrifice while in the line of duty. The message is clear: a uniform is not merely an identity but a pledge to protect humanity. The martyrdom of these 17 heroes will continue to inspire future generations to dedicate everything they have to the service of the nation and humanity.
