New Delhi: Ahead of Diwali , Delhi is witnessing a massive rush of holiday shopping. Meanwhile, a portion of a building under construction in Chawri Bazaar collapsed, causing widespread panic. The construction site has been closed amid the chaos. Upon receiving the information, the fire department dispatched six vehicles to the scene.
There are no reports of any casualties in the accident. However, sources indicate that several people are feared trapped.
According to the PTI news agency, the incident was reported at 9:50 a.m. from Gali Sitara near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station. Officials said more than six fire engines, including water tenders and rescue vehicles, were dispatched to the scene. Senior officials are also monitoring the relief and rescue operations.
The incident comes at a time when markets in Old Delhi are thronged with Diwali shopping. Large numbers of people are flocking to wholesale markets like Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar.
It should be noted that this incident occurred just days after two slabs of a building collapsed in Northeast Delhi, killing two people. The incident occurred during the construction of a new floor on top of an old house in the Milan Garden area. During the construction, a portion of the roof of the old house reportedly collapsed, causing the slab above it to collapse.
It should be noted that prior to this incident in Chawri Bazaar, a five-story building housing paying guest accommodations collapsed in Satya Niketan, South Delhi, on September 6. Seven people were killed in that accident.
