New Delhi: The weather of Delhi appeared completely changed on Monday morning.  In many areas, even the vehicle parked in front was not clearly visible. It seemed as if a blanket of smoke had spread over the entire city. The air quality index was recorded at 196 at around 6:30 am. Technically it is a 'moderate' category, but due to the smog, people felt difficulty in breathing and traveling.

Why has walking on the streets become like a challenge?

Vehicles were seen moving very slowly on Dhaula Kuan, Akshardham, and many main roads. Visibility was less than 50 meters at many places. Drivers had to keep headlights on even during the day. There was a fear of suddenly seeing a vehicle in front, so everyone was driving carefully. As a result, even normal traffic slowed down.

Were flights also affected?

The effect of fog was clearly visible on air travel also. Indira Gandhi International Airport alerted passengers in advance that flights may be delayed. The flights are currently being operated under the CAT III system, which helps in landing even in low visibility. Still, it takes a lot of time, so delays are almost certain. Passengers have been advised to check the status with the airline.

Was this the situation only in Delhi?

Delhi was not alone. Dense fog also remained in many cities of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Visibility reached almost zero at some airports. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange to red alert for Delhi and surrounding areas. The department says that the fog may remain dense for the next few hours.

What do temperature and air quality say?

According to the Meteorological Department, the day temperature is likely to be around 21 degrees Celsius and the night temperature will be 11 degrees Celsius. This time winters are feeling a little mild, due to which mild warmth is being felt during the day and less cold at night.

Overall, this morning smog slowed down the pace of Delhi. People had to be more careful while leaving their homes and the beginning of the day was a bit difficult.
