New Delhi: A dispute over a seat escalated into a scuffle, culminating in the shocking news of a death! An alleged altercation regarding a seat reserved for senior citizens on the Delhi Metro resulted in the death of a 48-year-old passenger. This incident has raised serious questions regarding passenger behavior, mutual restraint, and the tendency for minor issues to escalate into major conflicts within the metro system. The Delhi Metro Police have arrested a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and his lawyer son in connection with the case. Both accused were produced in court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. The police are conducting a detailed investigation into the matter.
Metro DCP Anand Dabhi stated that the arrested individuals have been identified as Sanjay Pratap Singh (65) and Siddharth Singh (36). Sanjay Pratap Singh is a retired IAS officer (1984 batch, AGMUT cadre) and a resident of Sector-44, Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Siddharth Singh, a practicing lawyer in Delhi, is a co-accused in the case alongside his father; he is a resident of Sector-50, Noida.
According to the police, the incident occurred on October 8, 2026. On that day, 48-year-old Pawan Sharma was traveling on the Delhi Metro with his mother, Durga Devi (aged approximately 65), heading towards Yamuna Vihar. During the journey, the mother and son were seated in seats designated for senior citizens. Meanwhile, Sanjay Pratap Singh and his son, Siddharth Singh, boarded the train at Mandi House Metro Station.
It is alleged that a dispute arose between Pawan Sharma and the two accused individuals over occupying a seat reserved for senior citizens. The verbal altercation regarding the seat reportedly escalated quickly, turning into a physical scuffle. What was meant to be a routine journey transformed into a tragic incident due to this dispute. However, the specific details of the altercation—its intensity and the exact circumstances surrounding Pawan Sharma's death—remain to be confirmed based on the investigation's findings and relevant evidence.
According to the Delhi Metro Police, information was received at approximately 5:47 PM on October 8 regarding a man collapsing on Platform No. 1 of the Supreme Court Metro Station. Police learned that the unconscious man had been taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital along with his mother. Upon receiving this information, police officers arrived at the hospital, where doctors declared Pawan Sharma dead. Subsequently, a preliminary investigation into the matter was initiated. The investigation revealed that Pawan Sharma was traveling with his mother and had gotten into a dispute over a seat with the two accused, who had boarded the train at Mandi House station. While the journey began as a routine trip for the family, it soon turned into a source of unbearable grief. The statement provided by his mother, Durga Devi, played a crucial role in advancing the police investigation.
The police stated that an FIR (No. 07/2026) was registered at the Supreme Court Metro Police Station on October 9, 2026, based on the statement of the deceased's mother. The case has been registered under Section 105 and Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, the alleged roles of Sanjay Pratap Singh and Siddharth Singh were examined, leading to their arrest. Following the arrest, both accused were produced before the concerned court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
The Delhi Metro Police stated that the investigation is ongoing. They are examining all facts and available evidence related to the incident to clarify the actual circumstances of the dispute and the details surrounding Pawan Sharma's death. This incident has once again highlighted the importance of restraint and responsible behavior in preventing minor disputes in public transport from escalating into violence. Seats reserved for senior citizens are intended to provide convenience to passengers in need, not to become a source of conflict. It is said that a dispute over a single seat snatched away the joys of life; one must exercise restraint in the metro, as the consequences of anger can weigh heavily on a family.
