New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)—often hailed as the lifeline of Delhi—has now embarked on a mission to breathe new life into its aging fleet. These metro trains, which have been in service for nearly two decades, are set to emerge looking as good as new. This initiative involves far more than just a fresh coat of paint; it represents a major transformation—a concerted effort to enhance the passenger experience.
With millions of people relying on the metro for their daily commute, safety, comfort, and reliability are of paramount importance. It is for this very reason that the DMRC has launched a comprehensive 'Mid-Life Refurbishment' program. This strategic move addresses a pressing need of the hour while simultaneously serving as an endeavor to reinforce passenger trust.
Under this scheme, the older trains are being equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Everything—from the interior aesthetics to the operational systems—is undergoing a complete upgrade. New amenities are being introduced to provide passengers with better information, ensure a more comfortable journey, and bolster safety standards. This initiative by the DMRC underscores its commitment not only to operating new trains but also to elevating its existing fleet to meet the highest modern standards.
Ten key updates have emerged regarding the Delhi Metro—widely considered the capital's lifeline—ranging from its makeover to the construction of new corridors. While reviewing metro, road, and flyover projects, CM Rekha Gupta announced that the city is set to receive several major infrastructure gifts by December 2026. Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reported that mid-life refurbishment work has already commenced on the Blue Line. Simply put, the 20-year-old metro fleet is undergoing a makeover to upgrade it with more high-tech features.
Network Expands to 416 Kilometers: Currently, the Delhi Metro network has expanded to cover 416 kilometers, making it one of the largest metro networks in the country.
Work Underway on 104 Kilometers of New Routes: A new network spanning approximately 104.45 kilometers—comprising 81 stations—is currently under construction, which will provide metro connectivity to several new areas.
Major Corridors to be Ready by December 2026: Key corridors such as Krishna Park Extension–Deepali Chowk, Majlis Park–RK Ashram, and Tughlakabad–Aerocity are expected to be completed by 2026.
Phase-4 Targeted for 2029: Under the Phase-4 project, work has already begun on the Lajpat Nagar–Saket G-Block, Inderlok–Indraprastha, and Rithala–Kundli corridors, with a target completion date of 2029.
Emphasis on Flyovers and Elevated Roads: 73% of the work on the double-decker flyover stretching from Azadpur to Tripolia Chowk has been completed, while the Yamuna Vihar–Bhajanpura flyover is 85% ready. Additionally, proposals have been finalized for a 19.2-kilometer elevated road connecting Wazirabad to the DND Flyway, as well as for the Tripolia Gate–Barfkhana flyover. 6. Mega Upgrade Plan for 70 Trains
According to the DMRC, 70 trains on the Red and Blue Lines are being upgraded in a phased manner, giving these older trains a new lease on life.
20-Year-Old Trains to Become High-Tech: Trains inducted between 2002 and 2007 are being equipped with modern technology to ensure they meet current standards.
31 Trains Upgraded So Far: Under this project, which is being executed in three phases, 31 trains have already been upgraded and returned to service.
Smart Amenities in Coaches: Passengers will now enjoy features such as CCTV surveillance, real-time information displays, Public Address and Passenger Information Systems (PA-PIS), and dynamic route maps within the trains, making their commute even more convenient.
Focus on Both Safety and Comfort: Fire detection systems, new electrical equipment, and mobile/laptop charging points are being installed in every coach to enhance both safety and passenger comfort.
This mega plan by the Delhi Metro clearly demonstrates that in the coming years, not only will its network expand rapidly, but the passenger commute will also become safer, smarter, and more comfortable than ever before.
