Guwahati: Guwahati: Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah on Sunday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of State BJP President Dilip Saikia and BJP MP Baijayant Panda.

Former Congress worker Sanju Bora also joined the BJP at the function held at the Assam BJP headquarters 'Vajpayee Bhawan'.

When did Borah quit Congress?

Earlier this week, the former Assam Congress chief had submitted his resignation to the party's high command, writing detailed reasons in his letters.

The Congress high command did not accept his resignation and many senior leaders visited his residence to persuade him to reconsider but Borah remained firm.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him and later Borah had sought time to rethink his decision, but a day later Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited his home.

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that Bhupen Borah will join the BJP on February 22.

After meeting Union home minister Amit Shah, Borah wrote in a post, “32 years vs 32 hours — the difference is visible.”

Bhupen Borah had earlier also shared about his 32-year political career, highlighting his rise from MLA to Assam Congress chief and his role in shaping the party's alliances in the state.

Assam is all set to hold the assembly elections later this year.
