Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at the residence and office of Prateek Jain, head of political consultancy firm I-PAC, as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out searches on Thursday.
The unexpected visit by the state’s top leader has intensified political tension in the city.
Officials from the ED were conducting searches at multiple locations linked to Prateek Jain. Teams were seen at his Loudon Street home and the Salt Lake office of I-PAC, seeking documents and evidence in a financial probe.
Mamata Banerjee showed up while the raids were underway. Her arrival drew a crowd of party workers, turning the investigation into a high-profile political moment.
The Kolkata Police Commissioner, Manoj Verma, had reached the spot about five minutes before the Chief Minister’s arrival.
Mamata Banerjee strongly criticised the central agency’s actions. She said the raid was politically motivated and targeted her party’s internal data and strategies. According to her, the timing and nature of the searches suggested pressure on her political organisation.
Reacting to the ED raid, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "Unfortunately, our IT cell office was targeted in an attempt to seize all hard disks. This appears to be part of a planned political strategy."
“He is a nasty Home Minister and cannot even protect the country. Enforcement agencies and the Home Ministry have failed to safeguard democratic institutions. On one hand, voters’ names are being deleted; on the other, there are attempts to illegally collect sensitive data," she added.
Opposition voices have seized on the developments. Critics have questioned why the chief minister would personally attend an ongoing investigation scene. Supporters argue her presence signals political resistance and leadership. Analysts say the move will feed debate ahead of the state elections.
The ED’s investigation is ongoing. The agency has not publicly shared detailed allegations or any charges. It remains unclear what specific financial irregularities prompted the searches or whether they will lead to arrests or further legal action.
