Tarn Taran: A man died in Punjab's Tarn Taran after he was set on fire by his brother-in-law over a family dispute. According to reports, the man had gone to his in-laws' house to persuade his wife and bring her back home.
The incident took place in Sangha village of Tarn Taran district on June 13, however, CCTV footage of the incident has now gone viral.
The deceased youth has been identified as Lovepreet Singh. According to reports, there had been a rift between Lovepreet Singh and his wife, Sandeep Kaur, for some time, after which she moved to her parents' home. On June 13, Lovepreet went to his in-laws' house to try to convince his wife to return home. During their conversation, the argument escalated to the point where Lovepreet's brother-in-law, Sajan Singh, in a fit of rage, threw a flammable substance at his brother-in-law and lit a matchstick.
The accused’s sister-in-law, Gurjit Kaur, rushed to rescue Lovepreet but also sustained severe burn injuries in the process.
However, the flames were so intense that Gurjeet Kaur was also caught in them and suffered severe burns. Both Lovepreet and Gurjeet succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The accused, Sajan Singh, also suffered minor burns in the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
CCTV footage circulating online clearly shows one man suddenly setting another on fire, as the victim desperately runs to save himself. Seeing Gurjit Kaur also engulfed in flames, a third man standing nearby rushes to help. The video shows the fire spreading rapidly and engulfing both victims. Tarn Taran police have registered a murder case against the main accused, Sajan Singh, for this heinous crime and are pursuing further legal action.
Inspector Navdeep Singh Bhatti, in-charge of Sadar police station, said that the accused, Sajan, who was burned in the incident, is also hospitalized. A case of attempted murder was initially registered against him, but now, following the deaths of both victims, the case has been upgraded to double murder.
