Hamirpur: An under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed during a severe storm in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least six workers and leaving several others feared trapped, according to police officials on Friday.
The tragic incident occurred late on Thursday night in the Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Severe winds and heavy rain caused a massive concrete slab of the unfinished structure to give way, burying labourers underneath.
The bridge, which is under construction in the Lalpur police station area, will connect Morakandar and Kurara's Mawaizar.
According to officials, the incident took place around 2 am and several workers were buried under the debris, killing at least six.
The assistant superintendent of police in Hamirpur, Arvind Kumar Verma, said that emergency personnel rushed to the site as soon as the incident was reported.
"We reached the spot immediately after receiving the information around 2 am last night that a slab had collapsed and some people were trapped beneath it. SDRF is here, and rescue operations are underway. We have retrieved and identified 5 deceased," Verma said.
Verma described the incident as extremely tragic, stating that the under-construction bridge collapsed due to a severe storm, killing six workers.
He further added, “We have identified 5 people out of 6 who are trapped. We will rescue them by removing the slab.”
