Muzaffarnagar: A firecracker market has been set up at the Government Inter College (GIC) ground in Muzaffarnagar ahead of Diwali, attracting fireworks enthusiasts. More than 25 stalls have been installed at the three-day market, offering a wide variety of firecrackers. Safety arrangements have also been made, with three fire tenders deployed at the venue. Blue drums filled with water and bags of sand have been placed outside every stall to help control any fire-related emergency.
The number of stalls in the firecracker market is reportedly higher this year compared to last year. However, traders say business is currently running at an average pace due to rising firecracker prices and declining profit margins. Firecracker trader Yogesh Sharma said that although there are more stalls this year, sales are lower than last year. He added that firecrackers have become expensive, while traders' profits have decreased and operational expenses have increased. He also highlighted delays in obtaining licence approvals as a major concern for traders.
According to Yogesh Sharma, Murga and Rajan varieties of firecrackers are witnessing demand in the market. Some new varieties have also been introduced this year. Another trader, Krishna Kumar alias Ravan, said that business is currently moderate, but he expects sales to improve in the coming days. He stated that green crackers are available in the market this year as well, with no major changes in the variety compared to last year.
Traders also shared details about the expenses involved in setting up their stalls. Yogesh Sharma said that the costs of tin sheds, electricity and other market arrangements are shared among the shopkeepers. According to him, the expenses may amount to approximately 5,000 to 6,000 per stall. Additionally, a fee of 6,000 per stall is reportedly being collected for market arrangements.
Fire safety measures have been given special attention at the firecracker market ahead of Diwali. Fire tenders from the fire department have been deployed, while water-filled drums and sandbags have been placed outside the stalls. Along with facilitating festive shopping, authorities and traders are focusing on maintaining safety at the market.
