Noida: The simmering anger of workers in Noida's industrial zones, which had been brewing for the past three or four days, finally erupted on Monday morning. Demanding a wage hike, thousands of employees took to the streets, engaging in widespread arson and vandalism. Due to the employees' protests, several key areas of Noida—including Sector 62, Phase 2, and NH-9—were severely affected, resulting in massive traffic jams on the roads.

The protesters not only blocked the roads but, in several places, also lay down in front of vehicles to register their protest. Outside the company premises as well, employees indulged in extensive vandalism and arson. They also targeted police vehicles, severely damaging several of them and setting others on fire.

What Are the Employees' Demands?

The employees protesting in Noida have demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government implement a new minimum wage structure, modeled after the system currently in place in Haryana. According to their demands, unskilled workers should be paid a monthly wage of ₹15,220; semi-skilled workers, ₹16,781; skilled workers, ₹18,501; and highly skilled workers, ₹19,426. The workers argue that this would ensure they receive fair remuneration and lead to an improvement in their standard of living.

During the commotion that ensued today, protesters alleged that they are being subjected to continuous injustice. They demanded that the company pay a minimum wage of ₹20,000 for an eight-hour workday. One protester claimed that the police are mistreating women, adding that they, too, are being beaten with sticks and chains. "Twelve of my colleagues have been detained at the police station," the protester stated.

What Was the Situation from Sector-62 to NH-9?

Due to this protest, the situation in Sector-62 and Sector-60 spiraled out of control as employees congregated on the main roads. The irate employees climbed onto road dividers to stage their demonstration, completely blocking the thoroughfares. Consequently, vehicular movement came to a standstill on routes leading from Lal Kuan to Electronic City and from Sector-62 toward NH-9. Commuters who had set out for work in the morning remained stuck in the traffic jam for hours. Police forces were deployed to the scene; however, managing traffic flow proved to be a formidable challenge given the overwhelming number of protesters.

What Directives Did CM Yogi Issue Regarding Workers' Issues?

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a meeting on Sunday night to address issues concerning workers. Emphasizing the protection of workers' interests, he asserted that every employee must be ensured a dignified remuneration, a safe working environment, and basic amenities. He issued directives to industrial units to strictly adhere to labor laws and to resolve employees' grievances within a stipulated timeframe.

The UP CM ordered all Industrial Development Authorities to establish direct communication with industry associations and unit management within the next 24 hours. The Labor Department was instructed to maintain continuous dialogue in coordination with the local administration. Furthermore, strong emphasis was placed on identifying and taking strict action against elements attempting to disrupt the peace under the guise of workers' issues, as well as on heightening vigilance within industrial zones. The CM warned against a conspiracy to revive the moribund Naxalite movement in the country and urged for a strict watch on provocative activities.
