Muzaffarnagar: A food quality complaint has triggered a commotion at a Reliance Smart Bazaar store in Muzaffarnagar after a customer alleged that worms were found inside chocolates purchased for his children. The complainant also claimed that the children developed health problems after consuming the chocolates and that further inspection revealed similar contamination in other packets.
The incident was reported at the store located in Adarsh Colony on Ring Road, under the jurisdiction of New Mandi police station. The complainant, Amjad Saifi, has accused the store management of negligence and demanded strict action.
According to Saifi, he purchased chocolates for his children from the store on Sunday evening. Later that night, after the children consumed the chocolates, they reportedly began coughing and experienced health problems.
Concerned about their condition, the family examined the remaining chocolates more closely. Upon opening one of them completely, Saifi allegedly discovered worms inside the product. He immediately stopped the children from consuming the remaining chocolates and recorded a video of the discovery, which has since circulated on social media.
At around 10 am the following morning, Saifi returned to the store with several other people to raise the complaint. During the visit, additional chocolate packets and boxes were opened for inspection.
Saifi claimed that worms were also discovered inside several other chocolates. The allegation has raised concerns about the quality, storage and handling of food products being sold at the outlet.
Saifi said his children's health had not yet improved and that he was taking them to a doctor for medical attention. He further alleged that despite repeatedly raising the issue, the store manager was unwilling to come downstairs and speak with him, leaving the complaint unresolved.
He has demanded strict action against the store management over the alleged sale of contaminated food products.
When approached for a response, Reliance Smart Bazaar manager Vivek Sharma declined to comment on the incident. He stated that he was not authorised by the company to issue a statement on the matter.
The role of the Food Safety Department is now crucial in determining the facts. An inspection of the chocolates and other food products available at the store could help establish whether the contamination allegations are accurate and whether any food safety violations occurred.
Local police personnel also reached the premises after receiving information about the incident. The commotion was reportedly continuing at the store when this report was filed.
The actual condition of the products and the circumstances surrounding the children's illness will become clearer following the relevant medical and food safety investigations.
