Many people often forget to update their Aadhaar card details after moving to a new place. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) advises that keeping the address on Aadhaar updated is very important, as it helps in smooth access to banking, e-commerce, and government services. An outdated Aadhaar address can also cause problems and increase the chances of misuse. The good news is that Aadhaar address updates can be done easily online through UIDAI’s self-service portal, while biometric updates like fingerprints or iris scans still require a visit to an Aadhaar center.

Step-by-Step Guide to Update Aadhaar Address Online

If you have recently shifted or want to correct any error in your Aadhaar, here’s how you can update it online:

  • Visit the Aadhaar Self-Update Portal: myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in
  • Go to the My Aadhaar section and click on Update Your Aadhaar. Select Update Aadhaar Online.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and log in using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Choose the option to update your address.
  • Enter your new address details correctly.
  • Upload a scanned copy of your address proof document in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format (file size must not exceed 2MB).
  • Submit the request. You will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the status.
  • Regularly check the SRN status to confirm whether your update is completed.

Why Regular Aadhaar Updates Are Important

UIDAI advises users to keep Aadhaar details updated from time to time. For children, biometrics are not fully recorded at a young age. Once a child turns 15, they must update their biometrics. Similarly, individuals whose biometrics have changed due to medical procedures or accidents must also update them. Keeping Aadhaar details accurate ensures hassle-free access to services and helps avoid future problems.

Problems You May Face If Aadhaar Is Not Updated

Mismatch in details may cause issues during bank transactions, airport check-ins, or availing government schemes. Incorrect details can lead to failures in OTP verification or other authentication processes.
Regular updates help secure government databases, preventing misuse or fraud linked to Aadhaar.
