Chennai: The suspense surrounding government formation in Tamil Nadu politics continues unabated. Once again, the swearing-in ceremony of TVK chief Vijay has been cancelled. Meanwhile, a supporter of Vijay has allegedly attempted self-immolation. According to reports, 40-year-old Isakkiyappan set himself on fire. He sustained severe burns and has been admitted to a hospital. It is reported that he was distressed over the delay in Vijay becoming the Chief Minister.
Amidst these developments, Thol. Thirumavalavan's party, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), has announced that it will declare its decision—regarding whether or not to support TVK's efforts to form a government—on Saturday at 4:00 PM. This decision by the VCK is considered highly significant because the party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay—the TVK—has come very close to reaching the majority mark. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the support of 118 MLAs is required to form a government; according to sources, the TVK now needs the support of just two more legislators.
According to sources, TVK leaders have formally sought the support of VCK chief Thol. Thirumavalavan for the purpose of forming a government. It is reported that a letter requesting support has also been sent by the party to the VCK leadership. A series of political meetings and consultations are currently underway in Chennai. In political circles, all eyes are now fixed on the VCK's decision, as its support could determine whether Vijay will be invited to form the government. Senior leaders of the VCK held internal meetings and deliberations prior to making their announcement. There is also considerable anticipation regarding this decision among party cadres and political analysts.
In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections held on April 23, no single party secured a clear majority. However, the TVK completely altered the dynamics of state politics by emerging as the single largest party, winning 108 seats.
Consequently, Vijay became the focal point of discussions regarding the formation of the government.
The Congress and the Left parties have already announced their support to the TVK from the outside, thereby further strengthening Vijay's claim. Nevertheless, uncertainty persists regarding the requisite numbers needed for Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to extend an invitation for government formation.
