Kolkata: Incidents of violence and vandalism were reported in several areas of the state on Wednesday in the initial hours of voting for the second phase of West Bengal assembly elections. Complaints of booth looting, attack and vandalism have been received at various places including Chapra, Shantipur, Nimtala and Bhangar. Despite heavy deployment of security forces, tension persists.
Information about attack on a polling agent came from Chapra area of Nadia district. A political party alleged that its representative was targeted after the start of voting. The injured person has been admitted to the hospital. However, the other side has termed these allegations false.
The incident of vandalism at a camp office in Shantipur area increased tension at the local level. Office goods were damaged in the incident that took place in the morning. Police reached the spot and controlled the situation and started investigating the matter.
A party in Bhangarh in South 24 Parganas alleged that their agents were prevented from entering the polling booth. Besides, allegations have also been made of stopping some voters from casting their votes. The administration has sought a report in this matter and investigation is ongoing.
Voting could not start at some booths on time, due to which there was resentment among the voters. Officials have instructed the concerned teams to normalize the voting process as soon as possible.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused BJP of hooliganism and election rigging. He said TMC workers were attacked throughout the night and several leaders were arrested. Mamta called it a conspiracy to spoil the festival of democracy. He also accused the central forces and Election Commission officials of bias.
The police warned some Trinamool workers, including the chief minister's brother Kartik Banerjee, that gathering of more than four people was not allowed near the polling booth. There has been heavy deployment of central forces in Falta and Diamond Harbor in South 24 Parganas. Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams have also been deployed.
The deployment of central forces, state police and RAF has been increased in sensitive areas. Constant patrolling is being done so that any untoward incident can be prevented and voters can vote without fear.
