Ancient Temple, Endless Water: The Fascinating Story of Pakistan’s Katas Raj Kund (X)
Islamabad/Chatwal: The Katas Raj Temple, located in the Punjab province of Pakistan, is not only a major center of faith for Hindus but also attracts the attention of the whole world due to its mysterious history and mythological beliefs. This ancient temple complex located in Chatwal district has remained a center of attraction for devotees and historians for centuries. There is a belief about the Katas Kund present inside the temple that its water never dries up.
According to Hindu religious beliefs, Katas Raj is related to the story of Lord Shiva and Mother Sati. It is said that when Mother Sati immolated herself in the yagya of her father Daksh, tears flowed from the eyes of Lord Shiva who was in grief. It is believed that two of his tears fell on the earth. One in Pushkar of Rajasthan and the other in Katas Raj of present day Pakistan. The water pond built at this place is called Katas Kund. Local people believe that this water pond still reminds them of the same divine event.
The biggest mystery of Katas Kund is considered to be its water level. For years there has been a belief that despite the scorching heat and less rainfall, its water does not get completely exhausted. Although experts talk about geological reasons behind it, devotees associate it with a religious miracle. This is the reason why people coming to the temple give special importance to the darshan of this pond.
Katas Raj Temple is also said to be related to the Mahabharata period. It is mentioned in many mythological stories that Pandavas had reached here during their exile. It is believed that the famous dialogue between Yaksha and Yudhishthir took place here. It is said that Yudhishthir had given life to his brothers by answering the difficult questions of the Yaksha. Although historians consider these stories to be part of religious traditions, they have special recognition among devotees.
According to historians, the Katas Raj temple complex was constructed in different periods. Many of the structures present here are considered to be more than a thousand years old. In the medieval period, this area was a major center of religious studies and spiritual practice. In ancient times, students and sages used to come here from far and wide. Many small and big temples in the temple complex still bear testimony to that rich heritage.
Nandana Fort situated near Katas Raj also holds an important place in history. The famous scholar and scientist Alberuni lived in this area in the 11th century and studied the measurement of the Earth's circumference. This research, which was done without modern equipment at that time, is still counted among scientific achievements.
The architecture of Katas Raj Temple reflects the influence of different cultures. A glimpse of Hindu and Buddhist architectural styles is visible here. The stone carvings and ancient structures make this complex very important from the historical point of view. This is the reason why this place is considered a major center of religious tourism as well as heritage tourism.
For the conservation of this historical heritage located in Pakistan, repair and restoration works have been done from time to time. Special events are organized here on the occasion of Mahashivratri and a limited number of devotees are allowed to visit. Katas Raj Temple is still considered an important symbol of the shared cultural heritage of the subcontinent.
