New Delhi: This year, Sawan will begin on July 30 and end on August 28, 2026, which means Sawan will last only 28 days. According to the Puranas, worshipping Lord Shiva during Sawan is equivalent to worshipping Lord Shiva throughout the year. Sawan Mondays, in particular, hold special significance. 

How many Sawan Mondays in 2026?

This year, Sawan will have four Mondays. While every day of Sawan is considered significant, the Puranas say that those who offer water, milk, and Panchamrit to the Shivalinga on Sawan Mondays are far from misfortune. Lord Shiva bless them with happiness, prosperity, and no shortage of anything. For those who wish to begin the 16-Monthly fast, the first Monday of Sawan will be very auspicious.

What is the importance of Sawan?

According to Shiv Purana, worshipping Lord Shiva during the month of Sawan is especially fruitful and helps in overcoming sins and fulfilling desire. 

As per mythological beliefs, the churning of the ocean took place in the month of Sawan. 

What are the benefits of Sawan Monday fast?

  • Fasting on Sawan Mondays removes obstacles to marriage. It increases love, trust, and harmony in married life.
  • Worshiping Lord Shiva alleviates physical and mental suffering and improves the health of the family.
  • Devotion to Lord Shiva increases spiritual awareness and paves the way to salvation. A person's life becomes balanced and positive.

How to observe Sawan Somwar fast?

  • Wake up in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes (white or light colors are considered auspicious).
  • Light a lamp at your home and take a vow to fast. Try not eat anything throughout the day or eat fruit.
  • While taking the resolution, keep your wish and Lord Shiva in your mind.
  • First of all, perform Abhisheka with water or Ganga water, then offer milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar (Panchamrit).
  • Offer food and recite the Lord Shiva Chalisa. Then read the story of the Sawan Monday fast.
  • Worship Lord Shiva again in the evening
  • Break the fast the next morning after the puja.
