West Champaran: A case of dowry death has come to light from West Champaran, Bihar, in which a husband killed his wife when his demand for buffalo and bike in dowry was not met. The incident is of the year 2020. After almost six years in the case, the court has convicted the accused husband Subhash Yadav and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him.

Why did the demand for buffalo & bike in dowry become the reason for murder?

The matter is of West Champaran. The deceased has been identified as Reena Devi. The police had registered a case on the complaint of Reena's mother. The allegation was that since marriage, Subhash has been pressuring his wife regarding dowry. A buffalo and a bike were demanded from the family. When the demand was not met, Reena was murdered.

What was done with the body after the murder?

According to the complaint lodged with the police and the facts revealed in the case, after Reena's murder, the accused tried to destroy the evidence. It is alleged that the body was first burnt and then cut into pieces. The remains were packed in sacks and disposed of. This development made the matter more serious.

What decision did the court give after six years?

After completion of the hearing of the case, the court found Subhash Yadav guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh was imposed. The court has also separately sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment on the charge of destroying evidence. An additional fine of Rs 25 thousand has also been imposed in this case.

Keeping in view the future of the minor children of Reena and Subhash, the court has also given instructions to ensure financial assistance for them. With this decision, while on one hand the guilty husband has been punished, the court has also taken cognisance of the financial condition of the children.
