Patna: A tragic incident of ammonia gas leak took place at a cold storage plant in the Hemnagar area of Bihar's Chhapra on Friday, according to officials. The fire department reached the spot immediately after receiving information. 

Where did the incident happen?

A report of ammonia gas leaking from a cold storage facility in the Hemnagar area of  Chhapra in Bihar's Saran district has caused widespread panic in the area. The strong smell of the gas spread, causing panic among residents nearby, and many rushed out of their homes as a precaution.

What did the fire department do?

Upon receiving information about the incident, teams from the local administration and fire department immediately swung into action. Saran SDM Nitesh Kumar and Regional Fire Officer Suraj Kumar personally arrived at the scene with their crews.

What did the official say?

Regional Fire Officer Suraj Kumar said, "As soon as we received information about the gas leak, our team immediately arrived. Upon arrival, we discovered that ammonia gas was leaking from the cold storage. The situation is normal now, but small amounts of gas are still leaking. Engineers will arrive soon to repair the leak. People experiencing discomfort in the vicinity are being transported to the hospital by ambulance. One person has been taken to the hospital."

Saran SDM Nitesh Kumar said, "We received information of ammonia gas leak at a cold storage plant... We have come here for inspection. The main supply pipelines have been closed... Efforts were made to mitigate the situation by spraying water to help settle and filter out the ammonia from the atmosphere. The plant lacked adequate safety measures, so we will be investigating the grounds on which it was provided a license by the Agriculture Department..."
