New Delhi: A fresh storm has erupted after Samajwadi Party leader Sumaiya Rana filed a complaint against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Nishad over a viral video that has sparked political outrage and sharp debate across parties.
Rana has moved the police in Lucknow, seeking criminal action against Bihar CM and Sanjay Nishad over the viral video that has drawn widespread criticism.
The complaint was filed at Kaiserbagh Police Station in Lucknow by SP leader Sumaiya Rana, along with her lawyers. She has asked the police to register an FIR and take strict legal action against both leaders.
The complaint refers to a video circulating on social media in which Nitish Kumar is allegedly seen pulling a Muslim woman's hijab during an official programme. The event involved the distribution of appointment letters to newly appointed AYUSH doctors. The visuals have drawn criticism, with several leaders calling the act inappropriate and humiliating.
Speaking to ANI, Rana said the incident sends a troubling message. "A video of the Bihar CM pulling down a woman's hijab is going viral. When a person holding a constitutional post behaves like this, it encourages others to do the same," she said.
Rana has also objected to remarks made by the UP minister while reacting to the controversy. Quoting him, she said he questioned the outrage and made comments that she described as offensive and insensitive. “Based on these remarks, I have filed a complaint,” Rana said.
Advocate Misham Zaidi, who accompanied Rana, said the incident and the statements attract serious penal provisions. He alleged that the act amounted to outraging a woman’s modesty and that the remarks could inflame religious sentiments.
“This is a clear case under Section 153A, as such statements can disturb law and order and create unrest,” Zaidi said. He added that Section 354 should apply to Nitish Kumar for allegedly grabbing and pulling the hijab.
The police are yet to confirm whether an FIR has been registered. Meanwhile, the controversy continues to escalate, with the video and the remarks keeping the political temperature high both in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
