Embraer Defense and Security, a Brazilian defence firm, and the Mahindra group have recently announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the C-390 Millennium aircraft in response to the Indian Air Force's (IAF) requirement for new medium transport aircraft (MTA).
The MoU signifies a strategic partnership between Embraer and Mahindra to pursue the MTA programme in India. This collaboration aims to enhance India's defence capabilities while promoting the objectives of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).

The IAF's potential order for 40 to 80 MTA reflects its need to enhance its transport fleet with modern, high-capacity aircraft. This initiative is expected to involve technology transfer and the establishment of manufacturing facilities in India to promote indigenisation.

Embraer's C-390 Millennium will compete with offerings from other aerospace firms, including Lockheed Martin's C-130J and Airbus Defence and Space's A-400M aircraft, in the bid for the IAF's order.
