Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a top Indian government-owned shipbuilder, is building eight Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Today, the fifth ship in the series was launched during a formal ceremony. The ship was named “ATAL” by Smt. Shilpa Agarwal, while the chief guest, Shri Rozy Agarwal from the Coast Guard Headquarters, was present at the event. The launch ceremony began with chants from the Atharva Veda and saw the presence of IG Sudhir Sahni, TM, DDG (M&M), and other top officials from the Indian Coast Guard.
In his speech, the chief guest said that the ship was completely designed and built in India by Goa Shipyard to fit the Indian Coast Guard’s needs. The ship is 52 meters long, 8 meters wide, and weighs around 320 tonnes. Goa Shipyard has made strong progress in delivering these vessels. These new patrol ships will help the Coast Guard guard islands and important areas in the sea. Their main duties include guarding fisheries, watching over the exclusive economic zone, and patrolling coastal waters. The vessels will also be used for anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue missions.
This project supports India's economy by helping local industries, small businesses, and workers. Many MSMEs and local suppliers have been involved in making parts and components for the ship.
The chief guest praised the Indian Coast Guard and Goa Shipyard for making these ships completely with Indian materials and effort. He congratulated everyone for reaching this important step and for moving closer to the goal of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The launch of “ATAL” shows India’s growing ability to build high-tech vessels. Goa Shipyard has shown its commitment to building top-quality, locally made ships that support the country’s security and defence needs.
