New Delhi: Supreme Court relaxed one more year of extension to thousands of teachers. Mandatory rule to qualify the TET exam had now been extended till 31st August, 2028. Earlier the deadline was 31st August 2027.

The order covers teachers who are yet to clear the mandatory exam. States where a large number of teachers had failed to meet the TET requirement are expected to see significant relief following this decision.
However, the court drew a clear line on one demand. Teachers appointed before 2009 had sought a full exemption from the TET requirement ; that plea was rejected outright.

Although, earlier plea was also outrightly rejected stating that "Teachers appointed before 2009 had sought a full exemption from the mandatory TET Requirement"

The bench also reminded teachers that job security cannot be their only concern. Quality of education, the court said, must not take a backseat.

The ruling comes months after nearly 30,000 teachers from Uttar Pradesh marched to Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, demanding either a waiver or an extension on the TET requirement. That protest had put significant pressure on the government to act.

The extended deadline now gives eligible teachers one more year to clear the exam and retain their positions.
