Lok Sabha Election 2024: Polling in phase 5 set for May 20 across 6 states; 49 seats await verdict

In the fifth phase, elections will be held on five Lok Sabha seats of Bihar, one of Jammu and Kashmir, three of Jharkhand, one of Ladakh, 13 of Maharashtra, 14 of Uttar Pradesh, 5 of Odisha and 7 of West Bengal.

As the Lok Sabha election 2024 moves into the fifth phase, 14 constituencies, including Raebareli, Amethi and Lucknow, in the key state of Uttar Pradesh will go to polls on May 20. Over, 49 seats across 6 states and 2 Union Territories will see voting during the fifth phae which has the fewest constituencies. The campaigning for the fifth phase of polls have already ended on May 18. 

Date and timing of phase 5 voting 

The date of voting for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh is fixed for May 20. On this day, lakhs of citizens across the state will exercise their fundamental right to vote, contributing to the democratic process of electing their representatives. The voting will commence at 7 am and conclude at 5 pm.

In the fifth phase, elections will be held on five Lok Sabha seats of Bihar, one of Jammu and Kashmir, three of Jharkhand, one of Ladakh, 13 of Maharashtra, 14 of Uttar Pradesh, 5 of Odisha and 7 of West Bengal.

Candidates in fray

A total of 695 candidates from 8 states and union territories will contest in this phase. Across these regions, 1586 nominations were filed for the 49 parliamentary constituencies. In the fifth phase, the public will decide the fate of many stalwarts including Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Rahul Gandhi, Chirag Paswan, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Rohini Acharya, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Kaushal Kishore, Bharti Praveen Pawar, Omar Abdullah and Piyush Goyal.

Serious charges on candidates

159 candidates of the fifth phase have criminal cases and 122 have serious criminal cases. Cases of murder and 28 of attempt to murder are registered against four candidates. Cases related to atrocities on women are registered against 29 candidates.
