Mumbai: Asha Bhosle ranks among the legendary singers of the Indian music industry. A part of the music world since the 1940s, Asha Bhosle is one of those stars who continue to reign over the hearts of music lovers to this day. Asha Bhosle began her singing career at the tender age of just 16.

After singing for low-budget films, she went on to collaborate with Bollywood's legendary music composers. Over time, she also introduced significant changes to her singing style. Consequently, she earned a place on the list of the industry's most versatile artists. Thanks to her melodious voice, Asha Bhosle continues to hold a distinct and distinguished position even today.

Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on April 11 after falling ill. She passed away on April 12. Her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, had shared that she was suffering from a chest infection and fatigue. Zanai had requested everyone to respect the privacy of Asha and her family.

How Did Asha Bhosle's Career Begin?

Asha Bhosle was born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli, Maharashtra. She was the third daughter of Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar—often hailed as the "Nightingale of Bollywood"—was her elder sister. Asha Bhosle stepped into the world of music at the age of just 10. Her debut song was in Marathi, titled 'Chala Chala Nav Bala'. Asha sang this song alongside her sister, Lata Mangeshkar. However, she gained widespread recognition at the age of 16 after singing for the film 'Raat Ki Rani'. It was in this film that the singer performed her first solo track. With this success, she became an overnight star.

In an interview, the singer once recounted the experience of singing her first song at the age of 10. She said, "I had to record my first song while standing in front of a microphone. I was trembling profusely at the time. I didn't even know what a microphone was; the concept simply hadn't crossed my mind." "My father had recorded and preserved his songs. When I sang my first song, I realized that I, too, could sing. It wasn't just 'Didi' (Lata Mangeshkar); I could sing as well. That is where my life truly began, and here I stand today."

However, despite hailing from a musical family and being the sister of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle still had to struggle in the industry. Her biggest competition was her own sister, Lata. Their singing styles were vastly different. While Lata Mangeshkar was known for singing romantic ballads in her melodious voice, Asha became famous for cabaret and dance numbers. There was a significant reason behind this as well.

Why Did Asha Bhosle Change Her Style?

In an interview, Asha Bhosle had revealed that during the early days of her career, her voice sounded very similar to Lata Mangeshkar's. Consequently, a person associated with film production once became confused. Asha recounted, "I come from a family of musicians; everyone from my father to my sisters are singers. My voice bore a resemblance to 'Didi's' (Lata Mangeshkar). In the beginning, whenever I sang, my voice would come out sounding just like 'Didi's'. Once, a man called me. In those days, music records listed the names of the actors, not the singers. Now, Asha (Parekh) was the actress starring in that particular film. The record label for that release was 'Asha Pictures.' The man mistook 'Didi's' voice for mine. He said, 'This is Asha's song.' I clarified, 'No, this isn't mine; it belongs to my sister.' He then apologized to me."

According to Asha Bhosle, this incident left her sleepless with worry. She explained, "I thought to myself: if I continue to sing exactly like *Didi*, then as long as she remains active in the industry, no one will offer me work. I won't be able to carve out a name or achieve fame of my own. Following that incident, I made a conscious effort to transform my singing style." "I started watching English films so that I could learn Western songs and understand how people sing in English. I also learned to sing Qawwali and Ghazal. Furthermore, I learned how to modulate my voice to suit various styles of singing."

How Did Asha Bhosle Set a Guinness World Record?

Asha Bhosle holds numerous records to her name. On the strength of her talent, she became the first Indian female singer to be nominated for a Grammy Award. Asha was nominated for a Grammy in 2005. Moreover, her name is also inscribed in the *Guinness Book of World Records*. In 2011, she was recognized in the *Guinness Book of World Records* for having the highest number of studio recordings. She has sung over 11,000 songs across more than 20 Indian languages. It was this remarkable feat that earned her this prestigious title.

Asha Bhosle's name has also been embroiled in controversies on several occasions. Among her most famous songs are "Dum Maro Dum" and "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja." These songs were considered quite bold for their time and sparked considerable controversy. Speaking to the media, Asha Bhosle had revealed that she had expressed her displeasure to R.D. Burman regarding his tendency to consistently assign her bold songs. During this conversation, the singer also disclosed that while she was recording the song "Piya Tu Ab To Aaja" for the film 'Caravan', the lyricist, Majrooh Sultanpuri, actually walked out of the studio midway through the session. He felt embarrassed by the very words he had penned, which is why he chose to leave.
