Payal Kapadia's highly acclaimed film, All We Imagine As Light, is going great guns on the international circuit. While the film received Golden Globes nominations, the BAFTA longlist of three big-ticket nominations is just another step to solidify the reputation as a cinematic masterpiece.

BAFTA 2024 longlist: Three key nominations

The British Academy recently announced its 2024 longlists, featuring Kapadia's film in three major categories: Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Best Film Not in the English Language. Competing with global heavyweights like Black Dog, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Emilia Perez in the Best Film category, the film stands as a testament to Kapadia’s visionary storytelling.

In the Best Director, she finds a high-profile spot, which would go to others including Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, and Denis Villeneuve. Now in the category of Original Screenplay, this places her side-by-side with well-known contenders that are Anora, The Apprentice, and The Brutalist.

Recognition internationally

The accolades for All We Imagine As Light don't stop there. Last month, the film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2025 Critics' Choice Awards. With titles like Emilia Perez and Kneecap competing, it has secured its place as a strong contender in international cinema.

This movie also earns it a slot at the Best Non-English Language Motion Picture during the 2025 Golden Globes. Of course, still facing some contenders in the way, I'm Still Here and The Seed of the Sacred Fig are there as strong contenders.

Historic year of Indian cinema

Earlier in 2024, the film made history as the first Indian production to win the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. It also claimed significant awards, including the Jury Grand Prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards, and Best International Film at the New York Film Critics Circle.

Re-release in Indian theaters

It was recently re-released in several Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bhubaneswar. However, after All We Imagine As Light was finally released on 22 November, it has elicited renewed public attention as well as interest from critical quarters.
