Mumbai: Veteran actor Govinda’s family has finally responded to growing online talk about the gun accident he suffered in 2024. In an interview, his niece, television and film actor Ragini Khanna, pushed back strongly against rumours that the incident was anything other than a simple accident.
In an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Ragini Khanna addressed these doubts directly. She said the family was shocked when they first heard the news and rushed to the hospital. She recalled that her mother got the call and hurried to Govinda’s side, while she herself waited a few hours to calm down before going.
Replying to how she heard of the shooting incident, the actress replied, “Mummy told me Chichi mama to goli lag gayi (Mummy told me Chichi uncle had shot himself). I was shocked and wondered who shot him. She told me that he shot himself, and I got quite emotional. I was told that he shot himself by mistake when his gun fell.”
To underline her point that there was no foul play, Ragini pointed to the heavy police presence at the scene. She said more than 200 officers were at the hospital and around 50 were stationed outside Govinda’s home during the investigation.
“How can you escape that kind of situation if it is not genuine?” she asked in the interview, adding she fully trusted the police inquiry.
Govinda was injured at his Mumbai home in October 2024 when a licensed revolver slipped and discharged while he was handling it. The bullet grazed his leg and he was rushed to a hospital, where he was treated and later discharged.
After the case hit headlines, social media users and fans began to question the official account. Some even drew comparisons with high-profile cases involving other celebrities, including Saif Ali Khan’s stabbing incident.
Govinda recovered steadily after the mishap. Within a month he was reportedly back on his feet and out of serious medical care. In the days after the accident, he also released a voice message from his hospital bed thanking fans, doctors and well-wishers for their support.
