Poonam Pandey to play Mandodari in Luvkush Ramlila (Social Media)
Entertainment News: The decision to cast model and actress Poonam Pandey as Mandodari in this year's Luvkush Ramlila has sparked controversy. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has strongly objected to this decision and demanded that the Ramlila Committee reconsider its decision. The organization states that when selecting such characters, not only acting ability but also cultural appropriateness and public sentiments should be considered.
VHP Delhi State Minister Surendra Kumar Gupta said that Ramlila is not just a theatrical performance but a living symbol of Indian culture, tradition, and values. He said, "Ramlila represents the ideals and values of our society. Therefore, when selecting characters, acting skills should not be considered alone, but the faith of millions of devotees should also be kept in mind."
Gupta further stated that the characters of Ramayana hold a special place in Indian society. If someone with a controversial image is cast in one of these key roles, it could hurt the sentiments of devotees. He stressed that the character of Mandodari symbolizes dignity and sacrifice, so the artist should be chosen carefully.
Reacting to the VHP's objection, Arjun Kumar, president of the Luvkush Ramlila Committee, clarified that every person should have the opportunity to improve. He said, "If a person has made mistakes in the past, should they never be given a chance to correct them? Poonam Pandey has been given the role of Mandodari in this spirit."
Arjun Kumar also stated that the committee's aim is to convey a message of reform and inclusiveness. He said that casting Poonam Pandey in this role symbolizes that people can rise above their past and start afresh. "If we don't give people a chance, how will society change?" he added.
Arjun Kumar also clarified that the committee is ready for dialogue. "If the VHP insists on this issue, we are open to discussion. If necessary, reconsideration can also be done. But we believe that people must be given the opportunity to improve."
This controversy has now become a major challenge for Ramlila organizers. On one hand, there is pressure to maintain traditional values, while on the other, there is an effort to convey a message of change and reform.
It remains to be seen whether the Luvkush Ramlila Committee will stick to its decision or change it following the VHP's demand. This controversy has brought this year's Ramlila into the headlines even before it begins.
