Sonam Wangchuk Case:  The case of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was arrested amid ongoing protests and security concerns in the Kashmir-Ladakh region, has once again heated up the political and social arena. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu on Wednesday, urging her to understand her husband's arrest and the sentiments of the people of Ladakh. In her letter, Gitanjali highlighted the sensitivity of the matter, given the President's tribal background.

Action under the National Security Act

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested last week following violent protests in Leh, Ladakh, demanding the extension of protection under the Sixth Schedule and the granting of statehood to Ladakh. Wangchuk was booked under the National Security Act (NSA) and sent to Jodhpur Central Jail. Gitanjali has accused the arrest of being a "dreaded raid" and a "witch hunt." She said she has not been allowed to speak to her husband since his arrest, despite police officers promising to arrange a phone call with him.

Not even allowed to take her clothes with her

Gitanjali said that Sonam was not even allowed to take her clothes with her at the time of her arrest. She is concerned about whether she is receiving proper medication and other essential items in jail, especially given her physical condition after her recent 15-day hunger strike. She also mentioned the police detaining members of her organization, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), without legal authorization.

Sonam Wangchuk's image as an activist

Gitanjali described her husband as a peaceful Gandhian activist who fought for climate change, education reform, and the development of the backward and ecologically sensitive areas of Ladakh. She questioned whether raising these demands should be considered a threat to national security. She described it as "political repression" and a violation of democratic rights.

Gitanjali specifically appealed

to President Murmu because she herself comes from a tribal background and is able to understand the sentiments of the people of Ladakh. She explained that the Ladakh region is known for its nationalism and support for the Indian Army, and that her husband has even built shelters for the local army. She said that insulting a native of Ladakh in this manner is not only wrong but also detrimental to the strength of the borders and regional unity.

Key questions asked of the President

Gitanjali has four questions for the President: whether she will be allowed to meet or speak to her husband on the phone; whether she can learn about the reasons for Wangchuk's arrest and her legal rights; whether she will be informed about Wangchuk's current condition; and whether citizens should be allowed to peacefully raise their voices for their rights.

Political and legal difficulties

Meanwhile, CPI-M MP Amra Ram, who had come to visit Wangchuk in Jodhpur jail, was also denied permission to meet him. The administration rejected his request, citing rules. The MP has asked the government to clarify under what conditions he will be allowed to meet him.

Wife Terms Arrest Constitutional Violation

Specifically Articles 21 and 22, which guarantee legal representation and access to justice. She urged the President to intervene in his discretion and equity and secure Sonam Wangchuk's "unconditional release." She said that a person like her husband could never be a threat to national security.

This entire case not only highlights the political sensitivity of Ladakh, but also the challenges facing democratic rights, freedom of expression, and the safety of tribal communities in India. Sonam Wangchuk's arrest and the outpouring of support for him are important indicators for the region's future and development.
