Mumbai: A.R. Writer and human rights activist Taslima Nasreen also joined the debate that started after Rehman's recent interview. While expressing her views on social media, she had said that fame and money often weaken the wall of discrimination. This discussion intensified after Rahman's statement regarding the alleged communal thinking in Bollywood, on which many types of reactions were seen.

How did the controversy start?

This issue was raised when Rahman talked about his career in an interview given to BBC Asian Network. He was asked whether being a Tamil musician had an impact on his Bollywood journey. In response, he mentioned the changes in the film industry and said that in recent years the atmosphere has not been the same as before. He also added that this change might have been related to the balance of power or communal thinking, although this did not happen to him directly.

How did Taslima Nasreen react?

Taslima Nasreen, while writing a long post on social media, said that Rehman is very famous and successful and he does not face lack of work or recognition. Giving an example, she said that many Muslim actors in Bollywood have been at the top for decades and are considered big stars even today. According to her, the real difficulties come to the common and weak people, and not to those who have both name and wealth.

Why did she mention her personal life?

Nasreen also shared her experiences in her post. She wrote that because of her name, people often assume her to be a Muslim, due to which she faces problems even in basic things like renting a house. She said that she faced protests and violence in different cities, whereas such situations are far from the lives of big stars.

What did Rahman say on this controversy?

After the debate escalated, Rehman released a video message. He said that his intention was never to hurt any community or individual. According to him, music has always been a medium for him to connect people and respect the diversity of the country. He described India as his inspiration and his home and said that his aim is only to serve through music.

What does the whole debate mean?

This entire matter has once again sparked discussion on discrimination and changing power equations in the film industry. While some people seemed to agree with Rehman, many people supported Taslima Nasreen's arguments. At present this debate is limited to social media, but it has again brought a sensitive issue to the fore.
