THIS movie sold 30 crore tickets abroad, but Rs 3 Cr in India—What went wrong?

Entertainment: Although the 1971 film Caravan grossed just ₹3 crore in India, it sold a record 30 crore tickets in China, leaving behind blockbusters like Dangal, RRR, and Pushpa 2.

Entertainment: Though it had made just ₹3 crore at the Indian box office, 30 crore tickets sold the Chinese crime thriller Caravan in the year 1971. Global box office blockbusters like Dangal, RRR, and Pushpa 2 can't even come close to that number.

A Humble Beginning, A Global Victory

Caravan, a super-duper hit in India, directed by Nasir Hussain, with Jeetendra and Asha Parekh, minted ₹3.6 crore. Its actual legacy was constructed years later when it was released in China. Its unprecedented success began with the 1979 release, as it sold 8.8 crore tickets, that of the highest-grossing foreign film sold out in China.

That's not all.

The film had several runs in China. In the end, it sold 30 crore tickets, a number unprecedented, much before Sholay, Awara, Dangal, and RRR. And with those 30 crore tickets, it is still to this day holding the record as the most watched Indian movie within cinemas across the globe, leaving far behind the mark that was created by Sholay, which only could sell 20 crore tickets.

Comparison with Blockbusters of Present Time

Dangal and RRR, for example, had fared well in China and elsewhere, but Dangal, for example, could only collect $238 million in China. On the other hand, the ticket collections of these movies are minuscule compared to that of Caravan. Even if Pushpa 2 is going in circuits post its release, it still lags miles behind the marvelous success of Caravan.

The Legacy That Caravan Has Left Behind

Like a crime thriller like Caravan on a shoestring budget, it most surely is a movie that certainly doesn't fall into the low-spectrum cultural paradigm. Caravan is one such movie that's earned as much money as ₹35 crore worldwide; it's just that it is the most iconic '70s-80s' film. Their success supersedes even the blockbusters of which the world hears.
