Islamabad: The situation has become heated again on the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. At around 3 am on Saturday morning, firing suddenly started between the armies of the two countries near the Durga Line in Terwa district of Paktika province. There has been no official confirmation of casualties from either side yet, but reports coming from the border suggest that the matter is quite serious.
According to local sources, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan forces attacked Pakistani military bases in Miranshah and Spinwam in North Waziristan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with drones. There have also been reports of fire in Spinwam after the attack. The Afghan side says that this action was taken in response to the bombing by Pakistan in Khost and Paktia.
Earlier, Pakistan had carried out air strikes in Kabul, Kandahar and Paktia. Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has said that a strict attitude will be adopted against Afghanistan. Islamabad claims their action was in response to cross-border firing. The Information Ministry said that the army responded immediately and there would be no compromise on the country's security.
When US President Donald Trump was asked about the situation in Afghanistan, he said that he is ready to intervene if needed. He mentioned his good relations with Pakistan and praised the government there. Many people consider this statement of his to be very important in view of the current situation.
The European Union has expressed concern about the increasing tension on the border. In its statement, the union said that the situation has become more sensitive due to recent incidents. An appeal has been made to both countries to exercise restraint, adopt the path of dialogue and follow international rules.
There are reports of action against Afghan refugees in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to Pakistani media, 79 Afghans have been detained, and preparations are underway to send them back. This move could worsen already strained relationships.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey have started efforts to calm the situation. It is being said that these countries have contacted both the parties. The United Nations is also monitoring the situation and is appealing to ensure the safety of civilians.
