International News: On Friday, the United Nations witnessed a sharp exchange between the United States and China over the ongoing war in Ukraine. The US accused China of helping Russia by allowing the export of certain products that can be used in war. In response, China rejected the claims and accused the US of increasing tensions by blaming other countries.
During the UN Security Council meeting, Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea called on all nations to halt the export of dual-use items to Russia. She directly pointed at China, saying that several military items used by Russia in the war have Chinese-made parts.
Dual-use items are goods that can serve both civilian and military purposes. For example, a drone can be used for photography or delivery in daily life, but it can also be used in war for surveillance or attacks. Communication tools, engines, and vehicles also fall under this category.
Shea said that Chinese-made components have been found in weapons, drones, and vehicles used by Russian forces in Ukraine. This, she argued, proves that China’s claim of strict export control is not believable. She insisted that all countries must take responsibility to stop the supply of such products that may help in continuing the war.
Geng Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, responded sharply to the US accusations. He stated that China did not start the Ukraine war, is not a part of it, and has never supplied any deadly weapons to any side. He added that China has always followed strict rules when it comes to exporting sensitive items.
Geng also emphasized that China has consistently supported peaceful dialogue and diplomatic negotiations. He accused the US of trying to shift blame instead of helping find a peaceful solution. According to him, promoting peace talks and a ceasefire is more important than playing the blame game.
This clash between the two world powers comes at a time when the Ukraine war has been going on for over two years. The situation on the ground remains tense, and thousands of lives have been lost. The US believes that China’s indirect support to Russia is making the situation worse. However, China has consistently rejected these allegations.
The ongoing confrontation between the US and China on global platforms like the United Nations could make it harder for the international community to work together on ending the war.
The Ukraine crisis has now grown beyond a regional conflict. It has now become a major issue in global politics, with powerful countries blaming each other. But beyond political battles, what really matters is peace for the people suffering in Ukraine. It is time for world leaders to move past the blame game and work together for a real and lasting solution.
