New Delhi: Iran's Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, on Saturday thanked the Indian government on behalf of Tehran for its "principled and firm support" in voting against the resolution passed on Friday at the 39th special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
"I extend my sincere gratitude to the Govt. of India for its principled and firm support of I.R. of Iran at the UN_HRC, including opposing an unjust and politically motivated resolution. This stance reflects India’s commitment to justice, multilateralism, and national sovereignty," Fathali wrote in a post on social media.,
In the resolution, adopted with 25 votes in favor, 7 against, and 14 abstentions, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) strongly condemned the violent crackdown on peaceful protests. A statement issued by the UNHRC said, "The UNHRC adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the independent international fact-finding mission on Iran for two years and the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran for one year. The resolution also called for an immediate investigation by the fact-finding mission into the repression of nationwide protests that began on December 28, 2025."
It further stated, "It urged the Government of Iran to respect, protect, and fulfill its human rights obligations and to take all necessary measures to prevent and protect against extrajudicial killings, other forms of arbitrary deprivation of life, enforced disappearances, sexual and gender-based violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, solitary confinement and torture, and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Last week, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, during which the two ministers discussed the "evolving situation" in the region.
