Yunus (Social Media)
International News: The country's interim chief advisor, Mohammad Yunus, has remembered Hindus and other minorities amidst discussions of political upheaval and a possible coup in Bangladesh. On Monday, he assured America that he would protect the Hindu community of the country. Yunus said, "17 crore people live here, and I try to take everyone along."
According to the Dhaka Tribune report, Younus made the statement during a meeting with US International Religious Freedom Commission (USCIRF) President Stephen Shane. He clearly stated that, "I have decided that no minority community will allow injustice to be done. Religious tolerance will be maintained in Bangladesh."
However, these things of Yunus have come at a time when their interim government itself has failed to stop the atrocities against Hindus. According to the report of the local newspaper First Alo, in 2024, more than 1000 attacks were recorded on the Hindu community. These attacks included incidents such as targeting temples, forced conversion, and possession of property.
Experts believe that Yunus's government is under pressure from influential Islamic fundamentalist leaders, due to which he could not take any strict steps on these incidents. This is the reason that India also expressed resentment and concern for the Yunus government many times.
According to political analysts, now that Yunus's government is facing the siege of the army and opposition parties, they have started trying to attain the sympathy of the international community, especially America. Yunus recently told his close colleagues that "it is not easy to hold an independent and fair election in Bangladesh." They do not want their term to be linked to electoral failure or communal intolerance.
It is also believed that Younus is preparing to resign, and before that, he is busy strengthening the image of his religiously tolerant leader. Experts are clearly considering it an 'image-making exercise' so that they are not accused of ignoring human rights in the future.
According to the 2022 census, about 1 crore 30 lakh Hindus reside in Bangladesh, which is about 7.5% of the total population. But continuous violence, social boycotts, and political insecurity have scared this community. The Hindu community is most affected in every election or era of political instability.
While the latest statement made by Mohammad Yunus is being seen as an assurance for the Hindu community, on the other hand it is also seen as an attempt to improve political strategy and image. Now the thing to see will be how much Yunus implements his words in the coming days, or it will remain only a political statement.
