Dhaka: Bangladesh's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has once again made it clear that general elections in the country will be held on the scheduled date of February 12. He said that the election timeline will not be compromised under any circumstances and the interim government is committed to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections.

Will general elections be held only on 12th February?

Yunus reiterated his commitment in a phone conversation with US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gore on Monday evening. He said that the people of the country have been waiting for their right to vote for a long time, which was suppressed during the earlier dictatorship. According to Yunus, there are about 50 days left for the elections, and the government wants to make it a memorable opportunity for democracy.

What did Yunus say about the situation?

Yunus admitted that some incidents in recent times have certainly caused disappointment, but the government's morale has not diminished. He said that the administration is keeping an eye on every situation and necessary steps are being taken to maintain law and order.

What issues were discussed with America?

Yunus informed on social media platform X that he had a conversation with Sergio Gore for about half an hour. During this, Bangladesh-US relations, trade, and tariffs were discussed in detail. Gore praised Yunus' leadership in recent tariff negotiations and noted that Bangladesh was successful in reducing reciprocal tariffs on US products by 20 percent. Work is also going on towards a big trade agreement between the two countries.

What were the charges against Hadi's murderer?

During the conversation, the issue of the murder of young political activist Sharif Usman Hadi also came up. Yunus alleged that some people associated with the ousted dictatorial regime were spending huge amounts of money to derail the electoral process. According to him, the leaders who have fled the country are trying to incite violence, but the interim government is ready to deal with every challenge, and such elements are being identified.

What are the main demands of Inquilab Manch?

After Hadi's murder, Inquilab Manch has intensified its demand for immediate punishment of the culprits. The organization says that the accused should be brought to justice before the 13th general elections and possible referendum. The forum has demanded the creation of a fast-track judicial tribunal to investigate the case, involving international agencies like the FBI and Scotland Yard.

Why was the government warned?

According to a media report, Inquilab Manch has warned that if justice is not provided in the Hadi murder case, a major movement will be launched against the interim government. The organization claims that despite the end of the 24-hour ultimatum, no concrete action was taken regarding the arrest. At the same time, legal advisor Asif Nazrul has said that this case will be heard in the Speed Trial Tribunal and efforts will be made to complete it within 90 days.
